Getting to Berkeley

Airport Transportation

The UC Berkeley campus is located 30 minutes from the Oakland International Airport and 55 minutes from the San Francisco International Airport, by Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART map). Shuttle service ($39) is also available, but may take longer than BART during rush hour.

BART from San Francisco International Airport: Taking BART (subway)  is the easiest and cheapest way to go to Berkeley. Follow the BART signs at San Francisco Airport. Your best bet is to buy a BART SFO Ticket Voucher in advance (https://www.bart.gov/guide/airport/voucher_sfo). If not, you’ll need to use the ticket machines. All BART stations have automatic ticket vending machines that accept nickels, dimes, quarters and $1 coins, as well as $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills. The cost for “Downtown Berkeley” is $9.55. Insert the correct amount and press ‘Buy’. You can also use a credit card in select machines.

When you enter BART, insert your ticket into the fare gate and it will be returned to you. Use the same ticket when you exit. The correct fare will be automatically deducted and tickets with remaining value will be returned. If your ticket has too little value, a sign on the fare gate will read “Underpaid: Go to Addfare.” A nearby Addfare vending machine will tell you how much additional fare you must add to your ticket to exit the BART system.

From Oakland International Airport: Take BART extension to the Coliseum BART station. Transfer to a Richmond train to the Downtown Berkeley station. The cost is $8.60. Southwest Airlines and Jetblue are the main carriers for Oakland.

Shuttle Service From the San Francisco and Oakland Airports

The Bayporter Express offers shuttle service to and from both airports. They require a minimum 24-hour advance reservation. The shuttle from the San Francisco Airport to Berkeley is $39 and $29 from The Oakland Airport. This shuttle service operates between 3:30 a.m. and midnight to San Francisco and 3:30 to 11 pm to Oakland Airport. Reservations are recommended.

Taxis and Rental Cars

Cab fare from the Oakland Airport to downtown Berkeley is approximately $35.00. Cab fare from the San Francisco Airport to downtown Berkeley is approximately $45-50.00. Most major car rental agencies, including Hertz and Avis, are located at both airports.
